Canada offers several economic immigration programs to help people gain permanent residency. The Express Entry system streamlines this process by allowing applicants to create online profiles and apply for one of four programs. Requirements for Express Entry Eligibility

- Must have at least 1 year of skilled, professional, or technical work experience in Canada within the last 3 years.
- Requires language proficiency of CLB 5 or CLB 7, depending on the job type.
- For skilled workers with foreign or Canadian experience in NOC skill levels 0, A, or B.
- Must have at least 1 year of full-time work experience and score 67/100 points on the selection grid.
- Points are based on six factors: Age – up to 12 points (best for ages 18–35), Education – must equal at least a Canadian secondary education Work Experience – more years = more points Language Proficiency – up to 28 points total Adaptability – up to 10 points (family/spouse in Canada, etc.) Arranged Employment – up to 10 points (valid job offer)
- For skilled trade workers seeking permanent residency.
- Requires 2 years of full-time experience in a skilled trade within the last 5 years.
- Must meet job requirements or hold a certificate of qualification from a Canadian authority, or have a 1-year full-time job offer from a Canadian employer.
- Allows provinces to nominate immigrants based on local labour needs.
- Some PNP streams are linked to Express Entry and require eligibility under one of the federal programs (CEC, FSWP, or FSTP).
- A provincial nomination adds extra points to an applicant’s Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.
Turning Ineligibility into Eligibility for Express Entry
Individuals who are currently ineligible for Express Entry can work toward regaining eligibility by addressing issues related to language proficiency, education, or work experience, often with help from a professional immigration counselor.
Gaining Canadian education and work experience, especially through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), is one of the most effective ways to improve eligibility and increase CRS scores.
